Chapter Seventeen

16th December: 9 Days Until Christmas

#GetBenLoved Group Chat:

Aaron If Ben asks you to go pick him up, don’t answer. Mark as unread. Then Ianto will have to go get him!

Robin This sounds like it could go horribly wrong.

Aaron No, it’s fucking genius!

Ben

Sitting in the break room at midnight with Ianto and a plate of fried brie and chips wasn’t something I’d ever expected to be doing, but now that we were there, I couldn’t imagine being anywhere else. I still felt bad about dragging him out so late, but selfishly I loved getting to have him all to myself for a few hours.

Now I just had to follow through and bloody talk to him before the moment slipped through my fingers again.

I speared a chip on my fork and thought for a moment, casually watching the snow through the small window set high on the wall. It was just about visible in the glow of the security lights I’d turned on on the walls facing the courtyard. I didn’t mind snow—it was pretty when it was undisturbed—but I hoped it hadn’t come down so heavily we wouldn’t be able to get the car out. The roads around here weren’t built for snow, and a couple of inches were the same as a couple of feet.

It wasn’t worth worrying about, though, because it wasn’t like we could go anywhere now, even if we wanted to.

“What’re you thinking?” Ianto asked, catching me staring out at the night.

“Not much. Just looking at the snow, hoping it’s not too deep.”

“Not a snow fan?” He grinned. “Don’t tell me you hate snow as much as you hate Christmas?”

“I don’t hate Christmas! I just never really got what the fuss was about, I guess.” I jabbed a wedge of brie with my fork, breaking it open to let the melted exterior run over some chips. “I’ve always been a little cynical about the whole Christmas is magic thing, but that’s probably because my parents worked the kind of jobs where Christmas doesn’t fix things. My mum’s a paediatric nurse, and my dad worked for the police doing vehicle collision investigation before he got cancer. They tried their best to make Christmas fun and magical, but that’s hard when you’ve just had to visit a family and tell them their dad’s been in a fatal accident or when you’re trying to help a family celebrate with a kid who probably isn’t going to get any better. They were good at compartmentalising, but I guess I just picked up on it. Especially because we didn’t always do Christmas on Christmas, and sometimes it could be a bit… muted.” I could almost feel Ianto wincing, and I didn’t want that. He loved Christmas and I didn’t want to ruin it for him. It was time to change the subject. “Sorry, didn’t mean to bring the mood down.”

“It’s fine.” He reached out, his fingers brushing the back of my hand sending a rush of sparks across my skin. “I’m sorry for pushing.
